Dr. Devgan interviewed in Allure Magazine: Lip Scrubs versus Lip Peels

As one of the busiest plastic surgeons in New York City and an expert on all things lips, Dr. Devgan was interviewed by senior Allure beauty editor Jessica Chia about the latest trends in lip care. See her article below.

Are Lip Peels Better Than Using Scrubs? A Plastic Surgeon Weighs In

BY JESSICA CHIA

APRIL 13, 2017

There are about a zillion ways to make your lips look as shredded as a pair of jeans — swiping on too matte lipsticks, licking your lips, using a sulfate-rich toothpaste — and only a couple ways to fix the issue (lip scrubs, a wet paper towel, picking at it by hand, esh). But lip peels might offer a softer, savvier solution.

In our never-ending beauty sleuthing, we recently came across an entirely new category of beauty product, heretofore known as a lip peel. Stacked Skincare’s Hydrating Lip Peel, which costs $26, is exactly what it sounds like: A gentle blend of acids (glycolic and lactic, to be exact) designed to gently slough dead skin off of the lips. “Lips see so much damage from talking and eating and environmental changes,” says New York City plastic surgeon Lara Devgan. “Glycolic and lactic acid are nice for creating a light peeling effect.” Here's how it works. We followed the directions and smoothed on a thin layer with the lip peel's built-in rollerball once a day (though Dr. Devgan says once a week should be enough to maintain results). It doesn't taste or feel like anything. Which is a plus — no stickiness, no residue, no nothing. And, thankfully for our forgetful selves, you don't even have to remove it! You can simply tuck the chapstick-sized peel back into your purse and go about your day.

And after all that, we were thoroughly impressed by how gentle it actually was. (The skin on the lips is some of the thinnest and most delicate; dosing it with high-test acid sounds like a bad idea.) If you use it daily for a few days, your lips will look smoother, but at no point did they molt the way your skin might after an intense chemical peel.

The biggest plus, though, is what they don’t do. “Lip scrubs can be damaging to the delicate mucosa of the lip; they can cause a little bit of abrasion, micro-injury, and even some bleeding if you’re not careful,” Devgan says. “If you’re too rough with exfoliation, you can get hyperpigmentation, and your lips will look a little more brown than pink.”

But although this lip peel is gentler than a rough scrub (and infinitely better than picking at your lips with your germy nails), there is a boundary to how much it can help. “The best way to stop the chapping cycle is by taking a little holiday from products,” she says. “No scrubs, no lip licking, no colors or glosses, just a simple emollient product like a hyaluronic acid serum or petroleum jelly.”

Dr. Devgan and her colleagues were proud to have been featured in the New Yorker OR Cover Challenge this week, both on social media and in Newsday. As an accomplished female surgeon, Dr. Devgan says, "Images have power, and seeing images of smart, capable women in positions of authority changes the way we internalize who we are and who we can become."

Females surgeons from across the globe and locally are recreating a New Yorker cover to show diversity in what has typically been considered a male-dominated profession.

The illustration, which was featured on the magazine’s April 3 edition, shows four female surgeons gazing down over a patient on an operating table. After it was published, Susan Pitt, an endocrine surgeon at the University of Wisconsin, challenged her female colleagues to replicate the image.

Pitt shared her recreation on Twitter a day later, using the hashtag #ILookLikeASurgeon. Soon afterward, dozens of other surgeons took her lead.

Stony Brook University Hospital surgeon Aurora Pryor shared her own photo on Twitter on Tuesday, showing herself with three female colleagues in scrubs and surgical masks.

“I think it’s empowering and shows that there is a strong female presence in a field that’s historically been male-dominated,” said Pryor, a professor of surgery and vice chair of clinical affairs.

Pryor, 47, said she’s seen the demographic shift in the surgical field firsthand. While completing her residency at Duke, she was only the 10th woman to graduate from the program and there was only one female faculty member on staff at the time, she said. Now, she says the residency program at Stony Brook has a nearly equal number of men and women.

“It’s great seeing that transition,” she said. “The future of surgery is going to be a lot more evenly split.”

Jennifer Lehman, a breast surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, also helped organize a photo, featuring herself alongside 10 female attending and resident surgeons.

“We just felt inspired by seeing all these women proudly photographing themselves and really just taking pride in what they do,” said Lehman, 43.

The breast surgeon said she thinks the social media campaign combats an “old stereotype.”

“We wanted to show that there’s actually a lot more diversity in the field, both in gender and ethnicity,” she said.

New York Times, How to Cut an Avocado Without Cutting Yourself, featuring Dr. Devgan, May 1, 2017

Dr. Devgan was featured in The New York Times on May 1, 2017, for her expertise as a board-certified plastic surgeon.

In addition to cosmetic surgery, Dr. Devgan is also trained in the full spectrum of reconstructive surgery, including hand surgery.

In this article, Times reporter Margaux Laskey highlighted the risks of kitchen injuries sustained when cutting an avocado. She touched on the dangers that come with cutting an avocado, the causes of avocado-related hand injuries, and what to do if you end up slicing your hand instead of the avocado.

Dr. Devgan gave her expert advice on how to handle an avocado injury, whether large or small. “The first thing you want to do is hold pressure on the area that is bleeding. If there are any amputated parts, they can be put in a plastic bag and placed on ice. I suggest going to the emergency room or calling your doctor, as it’s important to be evaluated by a hand specialist to make sure you don’t have any injuries to nerves, vessels, tendons or bones.”

Dr. Devgan recently traveled to Munich, Germany as a guest presenter to discuss her approaches to facial micro-optimization and as a guest panelist to discuss the recent trends in the use of technology and social media. For those who are unaware, Dr. Devgan believes in the idea that subtle is the new dramatic, and that is where her philosophy comes into play.

1.jpg

In front of the 400 Top Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists in the world, Dr. Devgan spoke about how she believes the term “plastic surgery” is evolving. Once alluding to anti-aging techniques to now focusing on all facial features and each one’s contribution to overall beauty. Dr. Devgan’s concept of non-surgical facial micro-optimization involves making many millimeter-level rejuvenating changes, or “tweak-ments”, to the face in the interest of increasing global facial beauty. Facial micro-optimization offers results that are more in tune with modern beauty, which emphasize facial balance, symmetry, and harmony. The results of Dr. Devgan’s facial micro-optimization maintain one’s facial identity, while delivering harmonious results that cannot always be achieved through surgical techniques.

The 2019 Merz Expert Summit took place November 15th - 17th and was an opportunity for medical professionals to discuss the latest in scientific developments and trends, as well as to collaborate on new ideas for the future of aesthetics. Throughout the weekend, Dr. Devgan reconnected with colleagues and met so many inspiring professionals from around the world.

Glamour’s latest “You Need This” article, “Dr. Devgan’s Lip Plumper Is So Good People Ask If I Got Filler”, discusses the stigma behind a traditional lip plumper versus Dr. Devgan’s medical-grade Platinum Lip Plump. For those who may not know, the Platinum Lip Plump is one of our best-sellers and has been featured across Vogue, InStyle, Allure, and Glamour.

Since Dr. Devgan is a board-certified plastic surgeon, she knows exactly what natural ingredients will create one’s lips to plump without any harsh irritation. Dr. Devgan’s “new-gen formulation swaps common irritants (chili pepper, menthol, or cinnamon) for niacin (aka vitamin B3).” Niacin is a naturally-occurring ingredient that is going to make your lips look “1 to 2 millimeters larger.” Not only does the gloss plump your lips, but it also contains hydrating additions like hyaluronic acid and ceramides that help smooth and soften the lips. It is truly the all-in-one miracle lip product! What also makes this product unique is that you can apply it over your favorite shade of lipstick for the same effect.

If you have not yet tried the product that has sold out 8 times already, you can find it here. Additionally, if you ever find yourself in New York City and want to come into the office to see the Platinum Lip Plump along with all of our other skincare products, you can stop by 969 Park Avenue. Dr. Devgan led the conversation by discussing how editorial coverage of cosmetic surgery has evolved from a speculation to a more open and honest discussion. Throughout her practice, Dr. Devgan has seen a wide variety of interests when it comes to trends in cosmetic surgery and now sees that lately people are going for a more natural look. We are living in a world where “duck lips” are out and subtle facial optimization is in. In other words, Dr. Devgan believes that subtle is the new dramatic. Dr. Devgan discusses what new cosmetic trends we will see in 2020 in new RealSelf Report

$

RealSelf recently released a new report on the rise in cosmetic surgery revision trends for the new year. RealSelf is the leading resource for people to learn and share experiences about cosmetic procedures and connect with doctors. Being that Dr. Devgan is the Chief Medical Officer of RealSelf, she discusses her thoughts on what the trends of 2020 will be from a professional standpoint.

Annotation 2019-12-20 124352.jpg

According to the article, “longer-lasting and more versatile injectable fillers are coming in 2020.” People love minimally-invasive injectables because they are minorly painful ways  to subtly optimize one’s own unique features. Not to mention, there is an injectable for nearly every area of concern. In addition to seeing more injectables in the new year, Dr. Devgan also believes “we will also see a new emphasis on surgical finesse—including more interest in surgical procedures that offer subtle changes, like lip lift or buccal fat removal.” The buccal fat removal is a surgery that “involves removing fat from the cheeks to slim the face and give cheekbones a more defined look.” These two procedures are two of Dr. Devgan’s most commonly performed surgical procedures. In addition, patients love these procedures as the results are flawless and the downtime is brief.

Dr. Devgan is a board-certified plastic surgeon and specializes in both injectables and surgical procedures. If you have not already, looking at her Instagram page is a great way to see some real patients’ results and to see how each procedure works. You can find Dr. Dvegan on Instagram @laradevganmd. If you are interested in learning more about subtle surgical procedures, feel free to call (212)-452-2400 or email office@laradevganmd.com. You can read the full article here.

Dr. Devgan tells Harper’s Bazaar readers about the latest injectable procedure

$

Dr. Devgan is featured in the latest Harper’s Bazaar article as a medical expert discussing the latest in lip augmentations: the botox lip flip. Dr. Devgan is aboard-certified plastic surgeon and specializes in facial optimization. This new approach enhances the lips by using neuromodulators, like botox, rather than filler.

gettyimages-938782572-1567188733.jpg

Dr. Devgan’s philosophy on injectables is that less is more. Today, there are less and less people requesting large and very enhanced lips, and more and more people requesting a subtle pout. The lip flip differs from the lip augmentation because rather than injecting directly into the lips, botox is injected at the corners of the mouth and near the Cupid’s bow. Dr. Devgan describes the idea of the lip flip as botox being used to “slightly soften some of the tensioned areas of the purse string” in order to cause “a little bit of relaxation of the pink-white border of the lip.” This is what causes the “vermilion border to flip out a little bit and give you a very subtle improvement in upper lip show.”

If the botox lip flip is something that interests you, make sure you see a board-certified professional, like Dr. Devgan, as the lip flips "involve highly strategic injections administered in teeny-tiny quantities.” If you go to the wrong person, you could experience immovable lips. This is a great treatment for someone who is interested in fuller lips before committing to lip filler. If you are interested in learning more about this treatment, feel free to call us at 212-452-2400 or email office@laradevganmd.com. To read the full article, click here.

Dr. Devgan’s New York City practice revolves around both surgical and non-surgical procedures. For the winter season, the treatment Dr. Devgan suggests are resurfacing lasers. Lasers can “reduce wrinkles, clear up hyperpigmentation, reduce acne and surgical scars, and just generally improve skin quality.” Dr. Devgan shares how post-procedure downtime is about 3 to 4 days and patients should avoid sun exposure for two weeks following. The best surgical procedure Dr. Devgan discusses are a facelift and a necklift. She recommends these treatments because the cold weather makes it much easier to cover new scars. The trick is that since scars are usually hidden behind the ears or under the chin “turtlenecks and scarves that work so well during colder seasons can help camouflage the healing process” Dr. Devgan explains.
